Few days back Union minister for environment and forests Jairam Ramesh claimed that the Himalayan glaciers have stopped melting. The government report stated that there was no conclusive evidence to prove that the himalayan glaciers are melting due to climate change. Then Rajendra Pachauri, a member of the prime minister's (PM's) advisory council on climate change and director general of The Energy and Resources Institute (Teri) rubbished the statement by calling the research ‘unscientific’.
Last year I was on a trek in Himachal Pradesh, a place called triund. Triund is nested quietly at 9,500 ft and over looks the lower Himalayan range named Dhauladuar. A small glacier called the laka glacier which has receded almost 30%. The locals can’t really do anything as this is the effect of the larger, global warming eating its way into over 15,000 glaciers in the Himalayas.
North India has primarily been a plain fed by glacial silt and water. Irrigation will be a direct hit, there by not only affecting the farm productivity but impacting the livelihood of millions. There is nothing really these people can do, it’s just their fate that some one chugging down their fancy carbon emitting car is destroying the natural cycle.
The irony of the situation is that the whole world is completely dependant on fossil fuels. From basic household use, to cars, industries, power plants and transport are all directly linked to fossil fuel. As population expands so does consumption. You don’t need any movie titled 2012 or some bogus rhetoric from an environment conservator, all you need to do is contribute. You all know that well if not an ice age something really bad is going to happen. And yes its all because of you and only you, me being a part.
